Addressing a gap: emotional preparedness in emergency management

Training that focuses on emotional preparedness as well as emergency management.

Michelle Richards and Clinical Psychologist David Younger delivered the first session of this targeted training for Campaspe Shire Council recently.

The workshop, called Emergencies & You: Emotional Preparedness for Local Government links emergency management operational responsibilities with applying the principles of emotional preparedness whilst incorporating stress, mind-body science and trauma exposure findings.

It prepares the workforce for what may be ahead whilst laying a strong foundation for strengthening wellbeing before, during and after emergencies.

Often, local government employees are called on to support their communities in times of disasters, with little training or support to face the challenges presented working in high pressure and often traumatic situations.

Recognising the gap in psychological preparedness for local government employees through their own experience working in and with local government staff, Michelle and David have shaped up this focussed workshop providing theory, practical application and real-life examples to anchor it.

Thank you to Campaspe Shire Council for being the first to undertake the training, and for the willingness of attendees to be open and welcoming.
