We’ve been so privileged to have spent some time walking through, better understanding and reconnecting with Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country over the past several months.
From the scar trees standing proudly against the urban backdrop of MCG and inner city Naarm (Melbourne) to the lush forests and floodplains of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung owned and operated Nangenala property in Healesville, (and, by no accident, home to saplings from the same scar trees) we have listened to learnt so much from Elders and members alike.
At Bolin Bolin Billabong in Bulleen, we learnt of the incredible collaboration between Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation, the University of Melbourne and the Department of Transport to restore health to the Lower Birrarung Wetlands, despite the ongoing challenges of urbanisation, highway construction and a significant deer population.
Over the next couple of months, we will be reflecting on these experiences, distilling many robust discussions, unpacking the strengths and threats to Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country, and the goals and aspirations of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung people to develop a concept Whole of Country Plan. We only hope that we can capture the wisdom of many with a unified voice and support the continued remarkable work of the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Cultural Heritage Corporation.
Over this time, if you are privileged to live, work or visit Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Country, why not get out, try to better understand and reconnect with Country too?
